子不语怪,此则非怪不录,悖矣,然而意不悖也。夫天地至广大也,万物至纷赜也,有其事必有其理,理之所在,怪何有焉?
圣人穷尽天地万物之理,人见以为怪者,视之若寻常也。不然,凤鸟河图,商羊萍实,又保以称焉?世人于目所未见,
耳所未闻,一旦见之闻之,鲜不为怪者,所谓少所见而多所怪也。苟不以理穷,则人生世间,无论天地万物广大纷赜也,
即一身之耳目口鼻,言笑动止,死生梦幻,何者非怪?不求其理,而以见闻所不及者为怪,悖也;既求其理,
而犹以见闻所不及者为怪,悖之甚者也。予今年四十有四矣,未尝遇怪,而每喜与二三酒朋,于酒觞茶榻间,灭烛谈鬼,
坐月说狐,稍涉匪夷,辄为记载,日久成帙,聊以自娱。昔坡公强人说鬼,岂曰用广见闻,抑曰谈虚无胜于言时事也。
故人不妨妄言,己亦不妨妄听。夫可妄言也,可妄听也,而独不可妄录哉?虽然妄言妄听而即妄录之,是亦怪也。
即《夜谭随录》,所谓为志怪之书也可。
