There is a good deal of evidence that increasing car use is contributing to global
warming and having other undesirable effects on people's health and well-being.

Bulk car ownership is associated with different environmental and health issues,
such as global warming, lung cancer, and stress. Even though the convenience of
possessing a car has made it nearly an inexorable trend, there are measures which
governments may take to discourage unnecessary car use.
The first and most effective measure could be to make it expensive to have and use
a car. This measure can be implemented by taxing heavily on first car buying, congested
roads utilizing, and gas consumption. By doing so, people could start contemplating
reducing their car use, particularly for unnecessary excursions. However, there is a
drawback of this approach it is frequently the lower residents will suffer from the
increased cost. The poor may have to cut some vital trips because of the fiscal burden,
whereas the rich ones would have the ability to maintain their convenience from
automobile use. Thus, this measure may be robust but not fair to the poor.
A different way to dissuade individuals from using their automobiles is to encourage
them using alternative transfers, such as trains, buses, and bicycles. Evidence has
demonstrated that cities, such as Tokyo and Paris, where more effective public transport
systems are offered, car use prices are reduced, and roads are less congested. People
will be willing to use public transfers when they are almost more convenient than driving
their cars. Therefore, authorities could spend more on infrastructure and transport
system design and construction to offer decent and competitive options.
In conclusion, increasing the cost of having and using a car might be an effective
way to reduce car usage. However, improving and encouraging public transport may
be the better and more sustainable way to achieve this objective.
